Exercises come in all shapes and sizes: The Obstacle Course

June 30, 2014 | stephen | Comments (12)

Hello digital friends, I thought that this week would be a good time to put my blog into perspective so you can understand what I'm blogging about and why. At the end of the summer I will be participating in an obstacle filled endurance race called Tough Mudder. This race is absolutely brutal on the body. I'm talking about 18-20km of mud, fire, hills and barbed wire which translates into a course that takes anywhere between 4-6 hours to finish.

Obstacle bookNow naturally, physical fitness is a big component of the race but given it's length and the obstacles you face, a significant amount of focus and mental endurance is also required. That is why this summer I have chosen to blog about exercises of all shapes and sizes.

You guys can follow me every week as I prepare to accomplish this crazy goal.

My questions for those of you out there this week are:

Have any of you ever done something similar before?

Does anyone else think this is pretty cool or do you think, as my mother puts it, "Let me get this straight, you're paying money to torture yourself?"

  1. OMG, that sounds so intense, mud?! Fire?! and barbed wires?!?!?! That’s crazy. My dad runs full marathons which I already think is already crazy since it’s 42km for around 4h. But this? OH MY. I hope that you are prepared! To answer your question, nope, never. I’m just not into physical activity, the closet I have technically came to something like this is volunteering to hand out race packs at marathons…guess that doesn’t really count.

  2. I think it is really cool to be able to do this, but being the wimp that I am, I have to agree with your mother, it sounds like torture. I even get winded walking up 3 flights of stairs on my way to classes at school. You should be really proud! Even though it hasn’t happened yet. Good luck! I cant wait to see your training schedule! 😀

  3. Sounds interesting. I wish you the best of luck. And no, I’m not really interested in exercising or any form of physical activity. Guess I’m just lazy lol.

  4. Yeah it’s definitely an intense challenge. I hope I’m prepared for it as well. I’m a little concerned as I’ve never done anything like it and I sit in an office chair 7 hours a day so I really gotta make up for it when I do train. I will keep you all posted on how things are going in my weekly blog

  5. That’s okay, even if you’re not really interested in physical activity I will be blogging about ways to keep your brain fit as well.
Hopefully some of the things I blog about might seem cool and encourage you to try it though!

  6. Sounds great! Although this post actually got me pretty inspired to xpersize this summer. I was thinking of going to my local gym for 3 hours per week.

  7. You can do it! Some races like Tough Mudder require you to be 18 but there are some other shorter distance races like Spartan Race where you only need to be 14 to compete.
As far as training goes, you don’t have to be at the gym everyday in order to do it.
If you can find time in your schedule to workout for 45 min maybe 3-4 times a week you will be well on your way.
