Exercises come in all shapes and sizes: Running, Soccer and World Cup Predictions

Link to TPL CatalogHello to all the people out there who read my posts, this week I'm going to be talking about alternatives to running. Running is arguably one of the most popular fitness activities on the planet. It is also completely free to do, which makes it a great activity for anyone to take up. I respect runners because running is hard and it requires true dedication and mental toughness. That being said, and you are probably going to hear me say this more than once over the summer, I do not enjoy running at all!

Now to clarify, I do run when I'm training for events and I have done several 5k races in the past. Given that Tough Mudder is approximately 20km long, I would be foolish not to run. The difference for me is that I tend to view running as a necessary evil. As a heavier person, it just takes that much more effort to move myself. When I run, the only thought that loops in my head is

"When can I stop?"

Thankfully, I have found a solution that allows me to really push my cardio level without having to pound the pavement: Soccer

Link to TPL catalogDid you know that soccer players run an average of 10+ km per game?

I am a huge sports fan and I know there will be many people who say "Hey, we run alot in my sport too!"

While I don't deny that other ball sports require alot of running and movement, there are very few that reach the lengthy distances set by soccer players over the course of a game.

This is why I have begun to mix soccer into our group training sessions as a way of incorporating fun cardio.

That being said, I leave the following to you this week:

Is anyone out there a runner? If so how do you prepare yourself mentally to run those distances everyday?

Or, are you like me, and would prefer to play a sport rather than run any day?

On a somewhat unrelated note: Argentina will win the world cup – Anyone out there care to tell me why they won't and why ________ will?

  1. I am definitely not a runner, nor am I an athlete. I don’t play sports but I like watching sports, specifically HOCKEY!! Argentina will surely win the cup although I was rooting for Brazil up until Neymar got injured during quarters so I don’t think Brazil can win without thier best player.

  2. Yeah it’s really unfortunate that Neymar got injured but Brazil still have a very strong lineup. I’m leaning towards the Germans on this one but you can never count out the home team in a crucial game.

  3. I prefer sports over just running too. It’s like multutasking because you’re running, playing the sport, and having fun!

  4. Absolutely. I’m sure I run just as much playing soccer as I do when I’m running distance but because you’re not thinking about it and because you’re having fun it completely changes your perception

  5. I run because it’s a simple action, and I’m not so coordinated. I have little depth perception, so most sports and I just don’t mix. Also, it’s something I can do alone, since I’m not much a joiner, and I can fit it into my busy schedule, since it doesn’t need to fit for anyone else.
How do I get my head in it? Partly, music. And partly, I call it meditation for the ADHD. I like the way when it’s all working and I hit the sweet spot, it’s still in my head for once while my body is working.

  6. I honestly don’t like sports. I tried to keep fit by swimming and jogging, but I can never find the time. I try, then I stopped trying…whoops.
The World Cup is lost on me, I don’t keep up with what is going on. All I know is that Spain put itself to shame by losing 4 to 0??? I don’t know, sorry soccer fans!
