Umm… what? Weird Music Videos

So I’d head the song Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler a bunch of times – it’s the kind of tune that shows up on classic radio stations or at karaoke nights. I like the song, and its a lot of fun to sing along to, to be honest, its not a piece of music I've given a lot of thought to in the past… until I saw the music video.

Umm… What is going on?

Glowing eyes? Ninjas? Dancing football players? My best guess is that this is supposed to be some sort of dream sequence. I don't think I get what's going on in this video, but I LIKE it!

Watching this got me thinking about all the other really odd music videos out there that I've seen in the past.

Another that I remembered was Ohbijou’s New Years. This video set to one of my favourite songs by this now sadly defunct Toronto band, and the video was greated by the amazing folks at Exploding Motor Car. In my humble opinion, it's as fascinating and beautiful as it is strange.

If you think that video’s cool, you should check out some of the behind-the-scenes footage that Exploding Motor Car took (part 1 / part 2) (be advised before you click – there's some swears). It looked like it involved making a lot of messes and having a lot of fun! They might even inspire you to start your own music video company! The library’s got some great books you can check out if this is the kind of thing that interests you.

So this leaves me wondering – what’s the weirdest music video you’ve ever watched? Share a link in the comments below and tell us why you liked it! (Also, can anyone tell me what's going on in Total Eclipse of the Heart? Seriously. I'm still confused).

  1. Total Ecliplse is a nice song. I first heard it when I was watching Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the voice over in the movie was done by Bonnie herself. Also, the song Unwritten is cool too.

  2. You remember when Floria Sigismondi was directing everything in the late 90s and other people started to copy her style and for a while everything looked the same, whether it was Bowie or Tool or Marilyn Manson, with muted hues, weird puppets, jittery camera work, and dark shadows? That was some oddness, though in a totally different way.
The 80s videos were either weird or boring a lot of the time because people were still figuring out what to do with the medium, though there were some that were real masters of it right away (Duran Duran and Michael Jackson, for example, were made for that).
Now, when videos are that weird, it seems intentional, and I don’t love it as much!
