SYNOPSIS
A suspense thriller in which a blind woman is threatened by three thugs who are convinced something of great
value is hidden in her house, and who will stop at nothing to find it. With only her wits, and her other senses to help
her, she keeps the criminals at bay until the very last climactic scene, when the blackness of night gives her the
advantage over her assailants.
Lee Remick and Robert Duvall were in the original New York production, and Audrey Hepburn starred in the film
version.
REQUIREMENTS
A one-to-two minute dramatic monologue is recommended. If you do not have a monologue, selected cold readings
will be provided at the audition. The audition may also involve a short interview with the Director. If called back, you
will be asked to read from the script with other actors.
SCRIPT
If you would like to read the play before auditioning, the script is on reserve at the Performing Arts Desk, 5th
floor, Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street, and at the Community Desk of the Toronto Public Library,
Cedarbrae Branch, at 545 Markham Road in Scarborough.

Cast Descriptions
Role Description
Suzy Hendrix Blind woman, was blinded in an accident only a year previous, and is
still learning how to cope with everyday functions. Susy is very likeable
and vulnerable. She has a good sense of humor but is not silly. She
wants to be on her own but relies heavily on Sam. She is smart and
very trusting of others.
Sam Hendrix Suzy’s husband. A photographer and Ex Marine, trying to help Suzy find
her way, but can be a little too demanding. Very likeable. We trust him
immensely.
Harry Roat, Jr. Criminal mastermind. Will stop at nothing, even murder, to get what he
wants. We should be afraid of him but also surprised by him.
Mike Talman Con artist, recently out on parole. Somewhat sympathetic character. He
should be very likable and charismatic but also have a dark side.
“Sergeant” Carlino Con artist, used to pull off scams with Talman, also just out of prison.
Not as likeable as Mike. He is a follower and follows Mike’s lead.
Gloria Young girl 9 to 12, not bad, but somewhat temperamental. She lives
upstairs from Susy and Sam. She really wants Sam to like her and she
is very strong when put in charge.
2 Police Officers Could be women or men.
Character age ranges listed are for stage portrayal. Actual actor ages may be flexible to allow for optimum
matching and chemistry between actors.
