What is a database?

The word "database" has many meanings and applications. These are almost always specific to the person who uses the word.

People in libraries use "database" to denote publications that are digital, or electronic in form. In other words, publications that are not printed on paper. Almost always, librarians use the word "database" to mean periodical or magazine articles that can be accessed through the library's web site, or as a CD ROM at the library.

The Toronto Public Library subscribes to many such publications. Each database holds thousands of articles from hundreds of journals and magazines. To access these publications all you need is a valid Toronto Public Library card. Most library databases can be accessed from any computer connected to the internet.

Watch for my next post, where I will walk you through a basic database search.
