Storytime for Adults….eAudiobooks!

Listening to a story is one past time that is enjoyed by people of all ages.  One great way for adults to indulge in this pleasure is by listening to audiobooks.   They are great for long airplane or train trips, road trips,  daily commuting or as a change from music when going for a walk.

As with books, audiobooks have also gone 'e'.  Toronto Public Library has two sources for eAudiobooks – OverDrive and OneClick digital.

If you have an internet-enabled device (such as an iPad, smartphone or tablet), the OverDrive collection is available to download directly to your device using the appropriate version of the OverDrive Media Console app (it is available for Apple, Android, Blackberry and Windows 7 devices).

If your device does not have an internet connection (such as an mp3 player), you will first need to download and install the desktop version of the OverDrive Media Console software for your type of computer (Windows or Mac), then download an eAudiobook to your computer and transfer it to your device.  The software will help with the transfer.  This software also functions as a player, so there is no need to transfer the audio files to other software to play the eAudiobook on a computer.

It is a good idea to check the Device section of the OverDrive Help website to make sure that your device is compatible with OverDrive and to find out which eAudiobook formats (WMA and MP3) will work on your device.  You can also watch thevideos provided by OverDrive.

Like eBooks, eAudiobooks will just stop working after the borrowing period is finished. Late fees will not apply.

As there are limited number of copies for most of the eAudiobooks in the OverDrive collection, there is often a waiting list (holds list) for the most popular titles.   While some audiobooks in the OneClick digital collection allow for unlimited use of their eAudiobooks, many have a limited number of copies and a holds list. More about OneClick digital in a future post.

Here are a few of the popular eAudiobooks available through OverDrive:

Artemis Fowl Breaking Dawn Hunger Games Lost Symbol Time Travellers Wife

  1. Fabulous…. post. Things in the eBook/eAudio world keep getting easier and easier. I recently listened to a eaudiobook of a book I’d read a long time ago and which would be hard to find in print at the library. It was Larry Niven’s “Inferno” a re-imagining of Dante’s Inferno. I have an iPod and it wasn’t too hard to set up and download. Listening to it was great fun.

  2. Thanks Jane. I’m happy to hear that you were able to access and use the OverDrive eAudiobook collection successfully.
For anyone interested in Larry Niven’s “Inferno”, here is the link to the eAudiobook:

It is available in both mp3 and wma formats.
TPL still has some copies of the book in print format. Here is the link:

“Inferno” sounds very interesting. I’m going to have to either read or listen to it soon. Thanks for the suggestion.
