Million Short : A ‘Discovery’ Engine

Are you bored with all your search results coming from the same handful of websites?  Are you tired of having to work through pages and pages of results to find a new source?

If so,  check out Million Short.

Million Short

Million Short is search engine  that allows you to remove the most popular websites from the search results.  You can choose the number you want to remove, ranging from the top million through the top 100k, 10k, 1k, or even just the top 100 websites from the search results.

You may ask yourself, why would I want to do that?

By removing the top popular sites, it allows you access to lesser known websites and broadens your sources of information.  Just because a site is not popular, does not mean that it is not a good source of information.  Many excellent websites do not make it to the top of search engine results.  The next time you are researching a topic, give it try.  You may find some real gems.

The Toronto Star had an article about Million Short  and its creator, Torontian Sanjay Arora, this past May.

The flip side of Million Short is Million Tall , which was released in July 2012.  Use this search engine to limit your search to only the top 1 million (or 100K, 10K, 1K, 100) most popular websites.   Give it a try and see if the results are different from your usual search engine.

If you want to try some other search engines, have a look at the Search Engines and Directories  list in the Toronto Public Library's Recommended Websites.
