LinkedIn is social networking for professionals. This is not a place for emoticon pictures or text/internet slang (sorry ‘lol’ lovers)! LinkedIn is sophisticated social networking with a purpose – to provide an online platform for professionals worldwide to connect and gain access to opportunities in their field/ profession.
LinkedIn was launched on May 5, 2003, and has become the world’s largest professional network with over 250 million members in over 200 countries worldwide. Similar to Facebook users set up a personal profile, but instead of listing their hobbies and interests, the profile highlights their education and work experience. LinkedIn members have access to job opportunities, professional development, and are able to read and write reviews for prospective and current clients/ colleagues. When reviewing applications for a position, many managers will look at the applicant’s profile on LinkedIn to get a better idea of their experience and compatibility for the position.
