As 6:30pm drew near, I was wondering if everyone was at CBC's Matt Galloway's Book Awards ceremony one floor up.  But Christina,TRL's Business Librarian, reassured me that people would arrive just before/after our start time.  Christina, as I've come know, is always right!

We had a lively discussion with approximately 30 aspiring, new, and seasoned entrepreneurs on a diverse range of small business topics and questions:

Human Resources:

  • How, who, and when to recruit, hire, and retain great employees
  • How to foster loyalty to retain employees

Leadership:

  • Traits of a great boss and entrepreneur
  • How to manage work/life balance

Strategy:

  • How to manage risk and uncertainty
  • When and how to scale a small business
  • On-line vs bricks & mortar retail

Financial Management and Accounting:

  • Impact of financial literacy on survival and success of a small business
  • Accounting software packages and unique ways to track expenses

Marketing:

  • How to differentiate your product or service
  • Learning from your competitors and identifying their key success factors

Thanks, Brooke Milne, proud and happy owner of Because You Said So, an event planning company, who assisted me during our Q+A and supplied copies of The Crave Company directory of young local women-owned small businesses for a draw.  You will be able to find a copy at the Library in the near future as well!

And thank you, Eva, Christina, and Jennifer who did a fantastic job organzing our event!
