Choosing the best job posting websites for your job search

Which is the best job site?  When you use a job bank, you want to find opportunities that you qualify for, jobs that match your experience and education. Most likely you are trying to find a job near your home or at least, where you want to live. But how do you choose the best job sites for you? You may worry about privacy, especially if you are job hunting for a better job while you still have one.

Here are some website features to look for:

  • How fresh are the posts? Are your finding new jobs from your search?
  • Are the jobs mostly from recruiters, rather than companies? Can you eliminate the recruiters from search results?
  • Does the site search for jobs on company sites or other job posting sites? Do employers need to pay to advertise their jobs to you?
  • Can you refine your search by location, key words, salary required, employment type, preferred industry?
  • Can you post your resume? If you can, employers may find you to fill a job vacancy..
  • Are there privacy options to protect your information?
  • Can you see who you are applying to or can you block access to certain companies? You probably don't want your current employer to know you are looking.
  • Can you save your search? Can you subscribe for a job alert?
  • Are there special services, options or advice?
  • Are there any fees for the job hunter?
  • Should you be looking at a job posting site for your type of career, e.g. a specialist site for chefs or biotechnology or new grads?

Is there a best job bank? You probably want to use more than one website. Check our list of job posting sites.

And for jobs in particular industries or occupations, check Career Bookmarks' sector specific websites.

Here's some advice on search word tips.
