Dalton Higgins

Dalton Higgins is Canada’s foremost expert on hip hop. He is a National Magazine Award-winning journalist, broadcaster and author who has written five books that interweave the worlds of digital culture, diversity, hip hop and popular culture into one potent mix. His latest book Far From Over is the first biography of Drake.

His book Hip Hop World has been used not only as a tool to increase literacy skills but also as opportunity to discuss issues of race,
sexuality and  politics and culture on a worldwide basis.

Dalton produced a documentary about barbershops, More Than a Haircut, and the blog for the flim  evolved into a forum to talk about one of his favorite subjects: fatherhood.

Watch him bring these diverse topics together his TED talk from 2010:

Emily PohlWeary

Emily Pohl-Weary  has published
five books. She was co-editor
of Broken Pencil magazine and
headed her own literary zine Kiss Machine
Her new novel, Not Your Ordinary Wolf
Girl
,
will be coming out from Penguin this fall. It’s about a “girl who goes from
being a vegetarian to wanting to eat her boyfriend.”

Emily is the founder of Toronto Street
Writers
. This free writing program began at Parkdale library but now operates from the Academy of the (Im)possible a community learning center in
the heart of the Junction Triangle.  The
Academy has some of the most exciting social and literary programs in the city so
be sure to check out their events page.  They recently launched a zine “What We Didn’t Know Existed” with performances on Canada Day July 1 at 7 pm.

The Star has an excellent article about them but there’s also a video if you want to hear the story in Emily’s own
words.

Emily’s
connections to the library go deep. She won a Hugo for completing the biography
of  her grandmother the science fiction writer Judith Merril .  That’s the same Judith Merrill who is the namesake for the Merril Collection of Science Fiction,
Speculation and Fantasy
.

Sheila Heti

Sheila Heti is one of the most talked about writers right now.  She has been longlisted both for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and for Time’s list of the 100 most influential people.

Heti is the creator of the quirky lecture series Trampoline Hall featuring speakers discussing topics outside of their area of expertise. She is also the interview editor of the Believer, and makes regular contributions to the New Yorker and the London Review of Books

The Chairs Are Where the People Go with Misha Glouberman
started out with the goal of gathering everything her friend knew into a
book.  It was selected by the New Yorker as one of the best non-fiction
books of 2011 and gathered glowing reviews across the US

That formal experimentation is behind her “novel from life” How Should A Person Be? which hovers between an autobiography, a book of philosophy and a parody of reality shows like “The Hills.”

Here she is reading reading some very funny (and very dirty) passages from the novel.
