Writers’ Trust of Canada Awards Announced

Writers-TrustThe Writers' Trust of Canada was formed in 1976 by a group of Canadian authors.  The non-profit organization administers a number of literary awards and grants for writers. 

On November 7, 6 of these awards were announced.

Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize:

Writers' Trust Engel/Findley Award:

Matt Cohen Award: In Celebration of a Writing Life:
Jean Little

Vicky Metcalf Award:
Paul Yee

The Writers' Trust of Canada/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize:
This prize is presented to the author of a short story published in a Canadian literary journal.  This year's winner was Alex Pugsley for "Crisis on Earth-X"  published in The Dalhousie Review.

Writers' Trust Distinguished Contribution Award:
This award celebrates contributions that have furthered the aims of the Writers' Trust.
This year the winner was the Metcalf Foundation for its support of Canadian children's literature and its sponsorship of the Vicky Metcalf Award.

These awards, also administered by the Writers' Trust of Canada, were announced earlier in 2012.


Nation maker

The Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing:
Nation Maker: Sir John A. Macdonald: His Life, Our Times, Volume Two: 1867-1891 by Richard Gwyn

Dayne Ogilvie Prize:
This year's recipient is Amber Dawn, author of Sub Rosa.   This grant is given annually to "an emerging writer from the LGBT community demonstrates great literary promise through a body of work of exceptional quality".

RBC Bronwen Wallace Memorial Award:
Presented to a writer under 35 years of age who has not yet published a book. This year's winner was Jen Neale.

The Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction will be presented on November 20, 2012.
