Google’s Wonder Wheel

A little over a year ago, Google (www.google.com) introduced a new way of viewing web results. The "Wonder Wheel" expands on the notion of subject directories, and is a fantastic development  in the way Google classifies information. Instead of simply listing web sites by categories, and subsets of categories, this system visually displays categories as if imploding one into the other, seemingly forever.

Here is an example we use in the library's Web Basics III classes (check the web site for Learning Centre programs offered in your branch). In the google search box type "semiotics." You will get a list of results. On the left you will see a list of options. Let your gaze travel downward until you see "wonder wheel". Click on it. This is what you will get:

Wonder Wheel

Try clicking on the categories as they connect to new categories and your search expands. On the right you will see the list of websites contained in the category you are on.
