Have Recent Web-based Email Problems Been Frustrating You?

Many people embrace free web-based email and all that it has to offer but it can become awfully frustrating when it does not work properly…

17,355 Hotmail accounts out of a worldwide total of 360 million (280 million active) Hotmail users were treated to the spectre of their email account contents disappearing over the New Year weekend from December 30, 2010 to January 2, 2011. Fortunately, the email loss was temporary as Windows Live Services explained that the impacted customers lost their email account contents during the mailbox load balancing between servers. Unread messages were being re-directed to the account’s trash bin or deleted completely. Hotmail and Windows Live Services apologized for the ensuing inconvenience although Hotmail users complained through Microsoft’s support forums to the tune of hundreds of pages.

Some Gmail users experienced some frustration earlier in December when they did not receive any email delivery over the December 11-12, 2010 weekend, owing to a glitch that delayed email message delivery for several days. Others were frustrated by Gmail’s inability to launch in Google’s own Chrome browser although it would work in Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Some reported failure with the suggestion of using an encrypted (https://) connection to make Gmail work in Chrome. Another suggested remedy was to use Ctrl-Shift-N to open a covert or incognito window on Google Chrome (where the cookies and browsing history are not saved) before signing into the Gmail account. To close the covert session, press Alt+F4.

Some Gmail users reported success with clearing Chrome’s cache by clicking on the wrench icon in the top right corner and selecting “options under the hood”. One then clicks on the “clearing browsing data” button, followed by clicking the checkboxes on what to delete, including “empty the cache”, and then click on “clearing browsing data” again. Google recommends making sure that the Chrome browser on one’s own workstation is the most current version available. Click on the wrench icon and then select “About Google Chrome” to determine whether Chrome is up-to-date or whether an online update is available for downloading.
