The May 2nd federal election is nine days away. If you are still looking for information about this election, then this post may be for you. The Elections Canada website should be your first stop on the internet, including using the postal code search on the home page to determine the local electoral district in which you live, the location of local Elections Canada offices, a list of candidates running locally to be a Member of Parliament, and where one should go to vote. This is especially important for those individuals who did NOT receive a voter registration card through the mail from Elections Canada. Naturally, you can also telephone Elections Canada at 1-800-463-6868.

The Elections Canada website also provides a list of registered political parties competing in the 2011 General Election, along with accompanying web site links for each political party where interested people can gain access to each party’s platform etc.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada has a produced a video and an accompanying transcript encouraging young electors to vote and participate in the democratic process. The website also provides information for aboriginal voters, voters from ethnocultural communities in 27 heritage languages, and voters with special needs .

For those of interested in the history and mechanics of the electoral system, you can access information through the Elections Canada website about the electoral system in Canada and a history of the vote in Canada. If you prefer to access this information through Toronto Public Library, several branches carry copies of the books A history of the vote in Canada and Canada’s electoral system, both published by Elections Canada.

If you are doing your own research on the current election campaign and its issues, Toronto Public Library’s website offers access to recommended websites providing information about the federal election, including those of media organizations.
