Provincial Election Information on the Internet
The province of Ontario’s 40th general election takes place on Thursday, October 6, 2011 to elect 107 Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) for the next Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Each MPP is elected to represent an electoral district or “riding”. Elections Ontario is responsible for ensuring that this election runs smoothly and is striving to make things easy for eligible people to vote in the 40th general election with options of “more days, more ways”.
Elections Ontario launched a specific 2011 General Election website with the web address www.wemakevotingeasy.ca/ to encourage eligible voters to participate in the democratic process by learning about voter registration; receiving the notice of registration card to confirm one’s place on the voters’ list; voting by special ballot in-person or by mail; registration of absentee electors temporarily outside of Ontario on election day; and, finding your electoral district and candidates using the postal code search.
Under “more days, more ways”, Elections Ontario offers 29 days for eligible voters to vote in the election, including election day itself plus 28 other days from September 8 to October 6, 2011. People wishing to vote by special ballot at a returning office have 28 days to do so from September 8 to October 5, 2011 (or 23 days from September 8 to 30 if wishing to vote by special ballot through the mail). Those choosing/needing to vote by assistive technology have 15 days to do so from September 21 to October 5, 2011; device options include the ATI (audio tactile interface), paddles and a sip&, puff device. Those with a disability seeking a more convenient alternate voting location may apply for such accommodation and receive a certificate to vote that must be presented at that location. Voters needing personal assistance can bring a friend or support person or ask an election official for help. Sign language interpretation should be arranged through the Canadian Hearing Society, Ontario Interpreting Service.
General election information is available in a variety of formats including print, large print, audio file, Braille and drawing exchange binary (dxb), and Braille electronic files (brf). For those interested in short-term, paid work, Elections Ontario has posted temporary, paid positions to apply for under “working for the election”.
