*UPDATED* Catalogue problems this week

April 14, 2009 | TPL Staff | Comments (20)

UPDATE: As of Friday evening, we've got a new server up and running, which should make the catalogue much more stable. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

*  *  *  *

We're having some intermittent problems with our catalogue. You may be finding it really slow to respond, and you may also be unable to sign in to your account.

We're working to resolve the problems as quickly as possible. If you need immediate assistance with your account, you can contact your local branch or phone or email Answerline.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have everything back to normal soon.

  1. I don’t understand why these problems are always coming up with the TPL website.
For example, even WHEN you can sign in, you reserve a book, then it loops you back to the same book reserve screen, after a couple of pointless screens, like the OK screen.
There is no way to get back you your search list, except by pressing the back button over and over.
When you sign in and press Account, it goes to the search page, etc.
Isn’t library software standardized by this point?
The old library system, from a couple of years ago, was better than this. Far better.
Something is not right with whoever is running this show.

  3. Hello, for the last few days the catalogue is not working for me at all, in all of my browsers. I tried explorer, firefox and chrome. I deleted all the cookies, and started again. I opened the webpage through torontopubliclibrary.ca and catalogue.torontopubliclibrary.ca ….
I consistently got “Error- OK” with a button in the top right “sign out” – whether I click back on the screen, browser, OK, or Sign Out – all of them lead to the same “Error-OK” screen.
What kind of cookie are you using, and if this is because of a security/privacy procedure to make sure that someone else isn’t using my account, that’s understandable. But what if it’s my computer at home, and I don’t want to close all the tabs and windows and restart my browser from scratch?

Also, when I have been putting my email in the box for updates when reserved items arrive, those emails (and the phone calls, when I had it set to that) weren’t being sent. I only found out that items were there when I dropped in. I do check my spam box, and they’re not showing there either. Please let me know what’s happening, and how I can fix this.

  5. Another day and another failed attempt to log into my account on your website.
I think I’ve lost count how often that’s happened. When the site is working I think it’s generally great. I’ve even gotten a few people I know to start using it.
However the problems are now becoming far too frequent. I can’t think of any other website that I visit regularly that has as many problems as this one.
Also have to agree with everything that Dude posted in his comment. Navigating around the site can be somewhat annoying to say the least.

  7. We feel your pain, everyone! We’re working to bring up another server, which we hope will resolve the problems. Thank you for your patience.
David, I’m not sure why you haven’t been getting your email notifications – we haven’t had that complaint from anyone else. You may want to send a request through our contact form (include your account number) to have our IT staff investigate.

  9. WOW! I thought it was only me who has constant problems with the “new improved” website. Ever since it was “upgraded” I have had problems with it being extremely slow, getting stuck, having to exit and go back in, having to log in over and over. Renewals rarely work, or you think they work then go to the library to find you owe them $5 since it didn’t actually go through! When I complained they looked at me like this was all news to them.
Not a new problem….I never actually expect it to work anymore at all, so seeing the ‘problems’ message seemed a bit redundant….

  11. I think we have all been very patient with this bad site and having it fail all too regularly. It’s been over a year now.
Who is responsible please? I think whoever it is should address our concerns directly so that we can have a sense of accountability.
If that is too much to ask I feel the next step will be to contact my city councillor who I have found very open to meeting with his constituents.

  13. When I click on the “view account and renew items box” and then sign in, it brings me to the Catalogue page, not the My Account page. I then have to click on My Account again. Can you fix it that it will immediately bring up My Account after I sign in?

  15. Hi Susan, That is a known issue and our number one usability problem. We’re working on it. Thanks, Dara

  16. Wow! You have a lot of very cranky users! I very rarely experience problems with the website and I’m continually impressed with all that is available and that you continue to improve the system – and it’s all for free! (I know, we pay through our taxes, but still..)
    Keep up the great work!
