News for Kindle Touch Users

You may have read about the recent news about about Amazon’s Kindle Touch 3G – a top-of-the-line digital book reader, finally arriving in Canada a half-year after its launch in America.

We would like to remind those users who wish to use this reader that, unfortunately, Kindle-compatible ebooks are not yet an option for Canadian libraries.

We wrote about the availability of eBooks for Kindle previously on our blog, explaining that there are many other devices compatible with Adobe PDF and EPUB ebooks offered at TPL. Amazon has separate agreements with publishers, distributors, and cellular carriers in Canada, and this means separate legal arrangements for Kindle library lending. As always, Toronto Public Library will continue to monitor developments in this area.

Hello. I just purchased a Kindle e-book device and am unhappy to learn that TPL has not yet made arrangements for compatibility.
When will this happen? Please reply.
    Thank you

  5. Hi Arlene,
Unfortunately, Canadian libraries do not have the option to purchase Kindle-compatible eBooks. Publishers and Amazon would have to agree to make them available to us, and this has not happened yet.
We would love to offer eBooks that work on all types of e-reading devices, but because control rests with publishers, we are unable to say when the current situation will change.

  7. Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD – FROM BC PUBLIC LIBARY – yes, in Canada. So – is TPL on board or not?
The Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD are Kindle’s tablet e-readers. They run on a forked version of the Android operating system and are library e-book friendly. Library e-books are downloaded directly to the device using the OverDrive Media Console app. The Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD don’t feature e-ink but both have a vivid full-colour display. They also includes apps that allow you to browse the web, check email, play games and more.

  9. Hi there. BC PUBLIC LIBRARY has this on their website. So their E-Books are downloadable. Is Toronto Public Libary on the same page? Yes or no?

  11. Hi Susan,
Yes, OverDrive eBooks should work through the OverDrive Media Console on a Kindle Fire tablet.
Since the Kindle Fire is not officially sold in Canada, we haven’t had many people ask about it (and we haven’t been able to test it ourselves), but OverDrive does list it on their website as a supported device.
