First official day of summer! What’s your reading plans?

Feels like it's been summer for a few weeks now, but the official start of summer is 1:16 PM this afternoon.  Hurrah!  The weather outside is nice, so I advise everyone not stuck inside today (for work, exams or w/e) to get outside and enjoy it with a book under a tree or otherwise.

Does anyone keep a stack (literally, or as a list) of things they're planning to read, but haven't read yet?  What's in it?  Big points of my list right now:

  • The Hunger Games - I think I'm the last person on earth who hasn't read these.
  • The Unwritten - Volume 3 of the collected edition of this amazing comic series is out and I've got my copy ready for the lunch hour.  It's really hard to describe what it's about, but it's great: it starts out with a guy whose father used him as the inspiration for an insanely popular series of Harry Potter-esque novels (and in the process ruined his life) finding out his father's stories might not have been so fictional, and gets weirder from there on out.

  1. Oh, you aren’t’t the last person on earth to not read the Hunger Games, they’re on my list too.
    My list currently consists of…
    Soooo many books that I’m sure I would run out of space if I began to type. What I am really waiting for is the third book in the Abarat series by Clive Barker. He’s taken two years to write this book, and judging from some of the reviews people have given over just a few chapters, I think that it will reflect those two years.

  2. I haven’t read hunger games yet.But I’m waiting to read the book ”Dead is not option”by Marlene Perez and I finally got it today :D.I think I’m going to plan to read hunger games since a lot of people suggest me to read it.Hope hunger games is good 🙂

    now I’m up to the second book–catching fire!
    Hunger games is the awesomest series you can ever find, lol
    I strongly recommend people who haven’t read it yet to read it.
    Hopfully the movie coming out is just as great~

  4. I’m so excited to see an online reading club for teens! My son just aged out of the Summer Reading Club, with last year being his last. He’s grumbling about me “forcing” him to do this, but I know he’ll get into it!

  5. I’m really interested in reading some classics. After reading Lord of the Flies in school, I’ve set in on Robinson Crusoe, and will hopefully get to Corral Island and Treasure Island by the end of the summer. Some Shakespeare is on my list, but I’m having trouble deciding what play. And some of my bread-and-butter, Stephen King, will top it off for now.

  6. I want read hunger games too!! My friends have been raving about the series, completely obsessed 🙂
    Right now I’m reading 20’s Girl by Sophie Kinsella, it’s so good, I keep laughing out loud (in the subway) while reading, and receiving strange looks from people…

  7. Being stared at for laughing out loud (or other emotional response) while reading on the subway is a very familiar experience for me after close to 20 years of riding the TTC. 🙂

  8. If I can recommend a Canadian classic, you might try Ethel Wilson’s “Swamp Angel”–my favourite Canadian novel of all time.
    I can’t recommend a Shakespeare play because I couldn’t decide on a favourite. 🙂

  9. I just finished my last exam today! 🙂
    The book i put on hold ALSO came today, so I want to run to the libary to pick it up, if only it would stop raining!
    The book i am picking up is called “I am Nujood, age 10 and divorced”
    and “Kill Shakespeare” is also in transit :)!
    I have been planning on reading Confessions of a mental aslyum seeking canadian, for a while (well its something like that, I cant remember the exact name though

  11. Maybe “Through travel and error : confessions of an asylum-seeking Canadian”? That’s the closest match to the title I can find in the library catalogue.

  12. OH Gosh, i still haven’t gotten the book i wanted to read as yet. it is called the “Exiled Oueen.” it is the second book to “The Seven Relams Series”. you humans should check it out. im a total manga fan so i’m watching this show called Nabri on Ou. it’s about nijas.

  13. I am like that with Louise Rennison. I stopped reading the Georgia Nicholson books in public! I looked like a loon. But she’s coming out with a new book soon, and I can’t WAIT to get my hands on it!

  15. This summer I plan to read through the entire pantheon of philosophical canon, and throw in some history books as well. I am currently reading The Socratic Dialogues so I have much– some two thousand years worth– of texts to go through 🙂 Still,I usually read fiction. The last novel I have read is Final Exam by Julio Cortazar; the last play, Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman. Series I recommend to those with a nonfiction bent include ‘Very Short Introductions’ by Oxford Press, and ‘Penguin Great Ideas.’

I’m currently reading “Tinkers” by Paul Harding, but once I finish “Tinkers” (which, by the way, is a beautifully written work), I hope to read “The Medici Effect” by Frans Johansson, “Death with Interruptions” by Jose Saramago, and “The Gargoyle” by Andrew Davidson sometime. …if not this summer than hopefully some other time during the year! 🙂

  24. A lot of my friends recommended me reading the Hunger Games series, so I think I will first start with this series. I am really excited to read it, I heard that it has a very interesting plot. Then next, I will read The Summoning (Darkest Powers Book 1). The author, Kelley Armstrong, visited my school, she read a passage from the novel, and I thought it is very suspenseful. I will make a video review on these novels, once I finish them! Yeah summer reading!<3

  25. I’m a TOTAL manga fan too! Nabri on Ou seems pretty interesting. I am currently reading Pandora Hearts, which is EXTREMELY amazing. The plot development is complicated and you just want to keep on reading. Too bad I just finished the latest chapter…Can’t wait for the next chapter!~

  27. Hi Betty, I’m Dian and a teen librarian and I thought you might like to know that it’s worth browsing the uncatalogued paperbacks as they don’t have holds on them and we have bought quite a few of Hunger Games that aren’t in the catalogue. So it is possible there might be one on the spinners.

  29. The hunger Games was an amazing series, its sad that there are only three books. However, although the book was VERY VERY VERY well written, I was not too fond of the ending nevertheless, it was still amazing!
    A definite must read!

  30. Oh, have you read the others written by her? “The Summoning” series is written in the same world as her other stories, but the characters from her other books and this series don’t meet. I really liked that series too! But, I really want it to be more than three books, just so we can get a glimpse of what her future will be like! 🙂

  31. OMG I love Cinda Chima Williams!!! I loved her “Heir” series, and the Seven Realms series is just as good. I seriously loved “The Exiled Queen,” and hopefully, you’ll get to read it too!

  32. Oooh, you’re talking about James Patterson right? You should really read his other books meant for teens, like “The Angel Experiment,” “Saving the world and other extreme sports,” and “School’s out forever.” I really liked “Witch and Wizard,” as well as his sequel, “The Gift.” You should also try his Daniel X series! 🙂

  34. I’m planning to start reading some older books. I’ve recently read Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day and I absolutely loved it! As the cover jacket said, it was a type of book that was “neither too literary nor too commercial”. It had a fun kind of vibe that really made me want to go back in time.
    So if anyone’s tried some of the classics but couldn’t be bothered with the long-winded dialogue and wants something different from the hoard of supernatural romances coming out today (not that I object either genres, I kinda read a little of everything), do pick up Miss Pettigrew!

  35. Heard a lot about Hunger Games, especially after finishing the Maze Runner (waiting on Scorch trails, 2nd book). Stuff to read: Monster blood tatoo trilogy, prequel to Bartimaeus, last book of Ranger’s Apprentice, catch up with the Artemis Fowl series, prequel to the Mortal Engines Quartet-Fever Crumb and Web of Air, the Gatekeepers books, found out about some new young adult and teen fiction trilogies like Gideon trilogy, Beyonders: World without Heroes. some really good books out there.

  36. Tons and tons of books! My mom hasn’t let me get any new books because I was supposed to be studying for my exams, but now that I’m done, BRING ON THE BOOKS!
    I want to finish the Mortal Instruments books, the Clockwork angel books, all the Sarah Dessen books, and find some new graphic novels to read. And Matched. I’ve been dying to read that, and so much more. Ack! I just hope I can get my hands on enough books (My paren’ts say I read too much, and actually now tell me to do other things besides reading. Leaves my friends baffled. But really, sometimes I do want to spend two whole days locked up in my room trying to finish a marvelous book.) 😀

  37. We’re reading The Hunger Games as part of a book club at Centennial Library on Tuesdays starting July 4th. It will run from 3:30-6pm, and you’ll be given a copy of the book, snacks, games, etc. All you have to do is register! If you want more information you can e-mail afterschool@torontopubliclibrary.ca

  40. Oh I loved the relationship between Chloe and Derek, too!! XD Anyway, the next two books in the trilogy are the Awakening and the Reckoning. She is currently writing another series that seems to be a spin-off of the Darkest Powers trilogy, but she says that the characters in the DP series won’t appear in the new series, until the third book in that series. The first book in that series, (which btw is called the Darkness Rising series) is called the Gathering. Her other series do not mention them as far as I know…Her other stories go in this order, Bitten, Stolen, Dime Store Magic, Industrial Magic, Haunted, Broken, No Humans Involved, Personal Demon, Living with the Dead, Frostbitten, Waking the Witch, and coming out in August 2011,Spellbound. These stories are more for adults than teens, which is why you probably haven’t seen them in the teens section of your library.

  44. I still haven’t gotten to the Hunger Games, either, but Percy Jackson is a fantastic read! I will say that the second is a little weaker than the first, I thought, but it gets better again in the third.

  45. Ha! I was totally like that, too. My mom used to throw me outside to get some fresh air all the time, when I just wanted to hang around in my room and read!

  46. Already read “Passion” by Lauren Kate… Can’t wait to read “Forever” by Maggie Stiefvater, when it comes out this July!!! xD

  47. Since I have a ton of time to catch up on some reading, I’m going to read some of the novels on my bookshelf. The first one: Bass Acwards and Belly Up; a novel about 4 teen girls that have just graduated from highschool trying to figure out how to proceed with their futures. Exciting!

  48. I plan on starting the “Hunger Games” and finish “Percy Jackson & the Olympians”. So far I only finished a book called “the sight” by Judy Blundell. The book includes two novels: “PREMONITIONS” and “DISAPPEARANCE”. I really like the book because it is “psychic scary” and there’s a bit of romance, but it doesn’t take over the book.

  49. I am reading “to kill a mockingbird” and it is REALLY good. If you have nothing to read, try it!!! Classic!!!!!

  51. I’m rereading the Harry Potter series to refresh my memory for the upcoming (and final!) movie so that’s taking up most of my time.
    “I Capture the Castle” by Dodie Smith, “Vaclav and Lena” by Haley Tanner and “The Virgin Suicides” by Jeffery Eugenides are on my reading list for August 🙂

  53. I read Under the Dome last summer and it’s crazy how King comes up with these uberly thought out plots. Lemme know what you think of the ending when you finish.

  54. My summer plans include a lot of reading,and I am looking forward or every little bit of it. I’m currently reading “The Historian” Elizabeth Kostova. It is a long read but an awesome one as well.

  55. One of the books I am absolutely looking forward to reading is Tina Fey’s Bossypants! Even though I have not watched a single episode of 30 Rock, I’ve enjoyed Fey’s humourous performance in movies. I am sure this would be a great read for all those who watches 30 Rock or is looking for a good laugh.

  58. What am I looking forward to this summer? the classics. Picture of Dorian Gray, Sherlock Holmes, The Tale of Two Cities and so on. I’ve been so focused on the current hot teen reads this past year that I thought going to the classics would bring some insight into how stories have evolved and transformed. Try it.

    A few mysteries I’d recommend:
    “The Ruby in the Smoke” by Philip Pullman – this is the first of a series set in Victorian England featuring a plucky heroine and lots of dastardly villainy.
    “The Boxer and the Spy” by Robert B. Parker – YA mystery novel, modern setting, by one of the most famous authors of adult detective fiction of the 20th century.
    I’ve also heard good things about “The Boy Sherlock Holmes” series by Shane Peacock, but not read them myself.

    I love classics too. I would also put Jane Austen on that list. A lot of modern teen fiction is based on her works, I would even go so far to say that a lot of movies too are based on her tales too. I would pick up Pride and Prejuicide as well as Emma.
    I should put Picture of Dorian Gray on my list too.

  66. The Virgin Suicides is a great book! There was a tasteful movie done of it too featuring Sloan, (my favourite band growing up)
    I just finished re-reading the HP series myself too. can’t wait for the movie.

  68. Well, i’m planning to finish the immortal series, i just got the last book, everlasting:) I also want to finish, the hush hush series,and the house of night series! also i’m hoping to strat rading new series this summer:) if any one has reccomandations, please tell me:)

  69. I agree with you Snobby_Dora! I also love all the classics, Sherlock Holmes being my favorite! I also plan on reading even OLDER books, like the ones by Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm. I just love the language the authors use in the books, like I’ve been taken back in time!

  70. ~I already read The Hunger Games. Loved that series but I’ve never heard of Unwritten, the only comic books I’ve ever read was Scott Pilgrim and loved it but I’m more into the whole reading the words with pictures, I rather just get the image in my head. But any ways I have a couple books I want to read; finish Aprilynne Pike’s two other books that follow the sequel to Wings. Read A Shore Thing by Snooki a.k.a. Nicole Polizzi, Awakened: House of Night novel, P.C Cast/Kristen Cast, Beastly Alex Flinn, Beautiful Darkness by Kami Gracia, Everlasting by Alyson Noel, Divergent by Veronica Roth, Red Glove by Holly Black, Forever by Maggie Stiefvater, Shine by Lauren Myracle and Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma.
    That’s probably not all but mostly what I want to get read. Any ways sorry about the long list. I tend to get kinda carried away. SORRY!!

  72. ~Yeah me too. I plan on getting all that read and done. Have you read Awakened: House of Night yet? Cuz I haven’t read Silence or Everlasting cuz they haven’t been released yet but i have Everlasting on hold.I’m really excited to read it!! And since you mentioned suggestions you should really read White Cat by Holly Black and The Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater and Wings by Aprilynne Pike. Have you read The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare cuz if you haven’t YOU REALLY HAVE TOO!! IT’S SO AWESOME!! You would love it. And Clockwork Angel by the same author. They’re both amazing series. You should defiantly read them!!

  74. The Hunger Games was a really good read. I really think you would enjoy them. And Percy Jackson… was REALLY GOOD!! I loved that series!! I think you would really enjoy it too!!

  75. I can honestly relate!! I’m really excited to read Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices!! I love Cassandra Clare, her books are Great but she’s not my favorite author but she’s styll pretty good!! My friends pretty much call me a booknerd but I can’t help it. I get really caught up in books if they’re too good!!

  77. All the books you mentioned are wonderful! The Picture of Dorian Gray is one of my favourite books (and I would certainly recommend other works by Oscar Wilde- particularly The Importance of Being Earnest). 🙂

  79. This summer, I think I’ll be re-reading a few books that I really enjoy. Some that come to mind include: “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, “The Outsider” by Albert Camus, and “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
    I’ll probably also read a few classics: “A Room with a View” by E.M. Forster, “The Portrait of a Lady” by Henry James and “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett.

  80. ooh, Dorian Gray is fantastic! I was totally obsessed with that book at one point. Sherlock Holmes are some fine mysteries, too, still stand up well today.

  84. This summer I’m going to read lots of books. I’ve already wrote down their names. First one is called “Paranormalcy” by Kiersten White. second one is called “Between Here and Forever” by Elizabeth Scott. I’m also going to read all of Sarah Dessen’s books. Including here new novel “What happened to goodbye”. And I can’t wait for Kristen Whites new novel “Supernaturally”. 😀

  86. LOL, coincidentally, I read “Unearthly” by Cynthia Hand this summer… it was sooo gooood 😀 I would recommend it to anyone! 🙂
    Can’t wait for the next book in the series (Hallowed) to come out, but it’s coming out in January 2012 :'(
    Have you read “Fallen” by Lauren Kate & “Hush Hush” by Becca Fitzpatrick?? I recommend those too, they’re about fallen angels as well 🙂

  87. No, you are NOT the last person to read the hunger games cause I am. I bought the book and i never even read it!!! But now I have decided to put it aside for a while cause I am now reading Spells by Aprilyn Pike and Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Dantaskey. I mostly just wanna read the last book in the series NIght World but its not coming out until August!!!! 🙁
