Summer Traditions, Poor Habits, Pride and Nerdfighting
Congrats to everyone for surviving another school year!
I have two end of school traditions that I would like to share.
Part One: The Movie:
My summer kick off is that I watch a movie called Dazed and Confused. The film was about the last day of school/the first night of summer within a small Texan town. I've watched the film so much that I eventually started adding the word, "man" randomly in sentences.
Part Two: The Book
After feeling guilty of spending some time indoors watching a movie, I pick up a book and lounge outside to read it. I have a specific criteria for this novel.. This novel must be about summer vacations. This time around, I'm reading Sarah Dessen's Along for the ride.
I got into Sarah Dessen this year, and so I've pretty much read out her books, but I'm still going back to this particular one. I love the characters surrounding it, and the ultimate message of not judging a book by its cover.
In honour of Pride this weekend, I would also recommend David Levithan's Boy meets Boy. David Levithan just so happens to be one of our Word Out authors this year; he co-wrote Will Grayson, Will Grayson with John Green whose books I love, love, love!! This summer I will try to keep my love of John Green's books to a minimum. Please note that the key word in that last sentence is try.
I'm happy that Word Out is back and I can't wait to be chatting with you guys again!
Do you have a personal summer kick off?
Tatted Librarian was at Malvern Branch for six years, but is now the "Big Cheese" (her words, not ours) at the Flemingdon Park Branch where she regularly talks about her love of John Green Novels, her one-eyed cat named, Slayer, and her ever expanding tea collection all while referring to everyone as "man"

the movie sounds really interesting, but the library doesn’t have the dvd for it D:
well, I can still check out the book 😀 by the way, what is the story about? (Sarah Dessen’s Along for the ride)
The movie sounds interesting, I’ll try it. I’ll try to read Sarah Dessen’s “Along for the ride”, but David Levithan’s “Boy meet boy” sounds soo interesting!! I just love gay love novels, I just read a little of the first volume of the novel “Only the Ring Finger Knows” it’s a little confusing but I just LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!
The movie is a classic from my youth, and the soundtrack is AMAZING..
Black Sabbath – Paranoid
The Runaways – Cherry Bomb (the Song that Dakota Fanning covered)
I love gay love novels too. There is a really good one, but a bit older called, escape velocity. I think that another one was released recently called, “Pink”. But i can’t remember the author.
The story is about this academic girl, Auden, would goes to her dad’s for the summer. Her dad is a writer, and has a new baby girl and a new wife.
Auden thinks that the wife is a ditz, and that her employees are shallow and vapid and not as academically focused as she is. well… let’s just say that everyone puts her in check. I don’t want to give away too much 😛
~I completely agree it does sound very interesting. And the two novels you recommended. I’ve heard very highly of Sarah Dessen, I’ve read one of her books before i don’t remember what it’s called but it was really good. I honestly enjoyed it and I’ll try to read this one too. Wasn’t it like just released or something? I don’t know but any ways the other book you recommended also sounds interesting. I’ve never read a gay novel before so it’ll be something new.
I need to read some Sarah Dessen so I can get properly excited about her September visit to Toronto!
Will Grayson, Will Grayson has been on my read pile, too – I loved David Levithan’s collaboration for Nick & Nora, though not so much with Naomi & Ely, so I want to see how this one worked out. I hear there’s a new one with Rachel Cohn, too, so I will give it a try, even though I was disappointed by N&E, just in case it recaptures the magic of N&N, which was such a favourite.
Nice rituals, man. I’m about to go hunting my first Chiller this weekend, myself, and visit with some friends we don’t see much during the school year. That, and I’ve broken out the surf punk and sundresses.
Whenever summer begins, I usually have a personal Harry Potter marathon, watching all the movies, reading all the books over again, and going online to read fanfiction…That’s the only summer tradition that I have, next to planning on what books to buy by the end of the year! XD
wow that’s really cool. do you do it every time? that’s really awesome!
I loved that book. I bought it after just reading chapter 1!!! Auden does begin to open up and I love who she turns out to be in the end.
it’s okay :p it’s sounds interesting, thanks for the background though 🙂
When I said “I loved that book” I meant ALONG FOR THE RIDE by Sarah Dessen. I’m going to look into her other book 😀
Yup! It’s a more recent tradition because I’m older than the Harry Potter books, but before that whenever summer started, I’d just go to the library and take 50 books out on my card, and then just read…I stopped doing that, which saved a great deal of pain for my back…LOL 🙂
I always spend the first day of summer trying out some new songs on my guitar. The school year is always so busy, so I don’t get to play it very often; the summer is the perfect opportunity! 🙂
I just finished readign Sarah Dessen’s Along for the ride. I loved that book so much that i recomend it to everyone. I also love Sarah Dessen’s The Truth About Forever. That was an intresting book, too.
<3
Sarah Dessen is an awesome author i’e read several books, there all amazing:) hope u like her other books:)
OMG another yaoi lover, only the ring finger knows is amazing, did you know it is also a manga. Also i highly recommend you read Gravitation it’s amazing
oh wow, i’ll put that on hold, During the summer i like light books, that make me think but not too much, so a summer favorite is Meg Cabot for me.
this is my first summer actually reading, so i don’t have a tradition yet. i wasn’t much of a reader but once i started i couldn’t stop! i hope some of the readers tradtions will give me an inspiration, to start my own:)
I play guitar too… What songs did you learn? I started with some Beatles- my old faithful!
Bahahahahahahaha… working for the library is so tempting.
I’m seriously like a kid in a candy store. I have to keep on reminding myself that maybe someone else would like to borrow them out too
I normally do a HP marathon at some point in time during the year too.
I actually read the manga first then found out about the novel, I read the Gravitation novel too, I also watched the anime on DVD from the library!!
P.S. I’m glad you’re a Yaoi lover!! <3
Thanks for all the recommandations!! I don’t think I can finish them all this week!! 🙂 It’ll last a while for me!! <3
I’d love to work for the library one day. It’s my dream, no matter how unoriginal or boring it may seem. And, I finish books very quickly, so I don’t really have to worry about other people wanting the books I take out because I’m usually done them in a week! 🙂 I think that is how it would feel as well, working in the library. I’d totally be Charlie from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! 🙂
my summer kickoff is first sleeping-in without worrying about school and then just spendig the day outside in the sun with some lemonade or somehting and reading what i have been unable to over the school year
this year i read the girl with the dragon tattoo I LOVE THIS BOOK
and i started under the dome by steven king ITS SOO GOOD!!
😀
OMG me too! I love doing that every summer as well..pile up on your favorite movies so far…and savour every part of it with a bowl of cheesy pop corns and ice cream!
This is sort of my “end of my exams” tradition, rather than end of the year.
After I come home from the last day of school, I watch the Disney movie Tangled.
I LOVE THIS MOVIE! It came out sometime before the end of semester one exams, and as I was writing the answers to a question, the Tangled song, “I have a dream” kept on playing in my head, and honestly, it was hard to stop myself from giggling. So I did this on the last day of school, and have decided this shall now be my tradition. Oh, another thing I do: I go to the library and borrow heaps of books after my mom cut me off before and during the exams. And I sleep in. Ahh, C’est la vie. 🙂
I borrow this three disc DVD from the library about Pierre Elliot Trudeau and spend hours watching it. I also get the Bachman Cummings Songbook CD and play that. It’s more for nostalgic reasons than anything because that’s what I did last year.
my summer kick off is sleeping until noon, then dragging my friend out of her house and heading to the park and eating ice cream. 🙂
Ahh Sara Dessen, a fabulous writer! i remember her book lock and Key was something to die for! ( For those who didn’t read it you should!)But placing a hold on those books takes forever to get there usually like 50ish people ahead, but in the end the wait is worthwhile!
Hehe, I could only imagine, when all the new releases come, the temptation to read it first instead of placing a hold that has 200 people before it! Which reminds me i need to hold the lying game 🙂
OMG! i do that too! my summer is like a Harry potter marathon i love those books so much i’ve read like all of them! I do that everytime one of the movies comes out, and like go on fansites and what not. I’m psyched for july 15th it’s going to be an awesome movie! I want the movie collection in blu-ray so badly there amazing movies to watch not like cheesy Rom-Com’s:P
My summer kickoff is going to the USA with my cousins for their yearly shopping trips, so I can buy a ton of books in the bookstores, then add them to my collection after I have read them… When I say it like that, it sounds really nerdy.. 😀
pfft. Nerdy is the new black; and black is always in fashion. I think that your trip so quite heavenly, actually. I am very jealous.
Dear SS,
that is why TPL has the paperback collection. Although they are not catalogued, you can normally skip the line. I would like to compare paperbacks to thrift store shopping.
To get at the very good stuff, you need patience and to dig around; It is the thrill of the hunt, you know
awww.. hmm.. I’m sure that we can help you think of something.. what you are reading now?
I find that in the summer, I’m in the mood for graphic novels. *cough cough* Scott Pilgrim *cough cough*
I am pretty much going to be playing sports, going hang with my friends, biking to places, sleeping, dancing and pretty much do the things that i wanted to do
I’m enjoying my summer by traveling to places near my house, but visiting them in more detail, and having an amazing vacation near my house. It is just a few hours drive, and I went to Downtown already, and I’m going to go to Quebec. I will also have fun after the trips, by going to Movie Nights at the Library, and some 3D movies at the Theater. I went to the beach, and my summer kickoff is great! I plan to learning to swim over the summer, by going to community pools and I have a lot planned ahead. I love shopping, and I plan on getting enough outfits for school. And of course, I will read throughout the summer.
My summer has been great so far. I have mostly been staying at home. Sleeping late. Waking up late. Playing lots of Black Ops. Pretty typical for me. LOL.
