Picture This!

Colleague JM checks in below with some details about this week's nonfiction selection:

Week7-gn-picturethisIf you are looking to diversify your reading palate this summer, I would strongly recommend Picture This by Lynda Barry. In this artfully constructed graphic novel, Barry uses a number of mediums to bring people back to the days when creating artwork was a joyous childhood pastime.

While it does not take long to read, one might wish to peruse Barry’s illustrations for hours as many pages offer unique diagrams, characters and commentary.  After reading Picture This, I felt motivated to grab some old art supplies and rediscover the glory associated with making artwork solely for the purpose of putting pencil to paper.

Whether you are an inspired future Picasso, or simply someone who used to enjoy doodling in class, I think everyone has something to gain by picking up this book in the final weeks of summer!

  1. Wow, that’s sounds amazing. I wouldn’t call myself an artist, I doubt any one would but I love to just put pencil on paper so I think I would definitely check out this book! Sounds really cool!

  2. I’m still mentally preparing myself to start art school this September, so this post could not have come at a better time πŸ˜€

  5. Congratulations on starting art school! That’s courageous!
I’ve always enjoyed art but find it takes a leap of faith to really believe in my talent as something I want to be immersed in. It seems really competitive.

  6. Thanks KC! I really appreciate that πŸ™‚ I’ve got lots of support, haha.
Personally, I’m more intimidated by the competitive nature of becoming a lawyer or doctor, but you’re right, it’s a little tricky to find work when there’s so many other talented people, eh? But now’s the best time for artists to ‘thrive’ since their work can be applied in so many fields πŸ™‚ Plus, for me, it’s hard to feel nervous and serious when your school has polka dots and is supported by multi-coloured pencils! Bwahha!
Anyhow, I hope you stay creative regardless of what career path you choose.
