Summer Reading Roundup
I know summer's not over, and yes, I'll be reading more, but I've read some great stuff, and I'm not sure I really want to wait until the very end to share them with you – this way you might have time to read a couple of them, too!I've been reading a few good ones off our reading list (Body at the Tower and Dust City are both definitely recommended!), but you've heard about those. Here are a couple of other titles I've really enjoyed.
Blood Red Road, by Moira Young
In a year full of strong dystopic novels, this is one of the standouts. Once it gets going, it's pulls you right along, with another challenge ahead at every turn. Saba, the main character, is equally compelling. She's fiercely independent and stubborn, single-minded in her goal, and refuses help from people who care about her. I'm sure we've all had moments of feeling that stubborn, so she felt very real and relateable. Plot? Well, it starts with her beloved twin borther getting kidnapped, and her vow to find him, and that quest takes her through deserts, forced cage matches, escapes, rocky overpasses, the storming of a castle, and a last standoff with the king and his warriors. A budding romance and opening of her heart to her sister round out the growing up Saba has to do and give the novel some emotional depth, as well. A final note is that though this is the first of a trilogy, the ending manages to leave me eager to read the rest while also satisfying me by not leaving me hanging, which I totally appreciate!
In a world? Fantastic. Apparen'tly director Ridley Scott agreed, and bought the movie rights before publication, so we may well see this hit screens in the next few years. It's a perfect fit, too – seeing as he directed both Blade Runner and Gladiator, we know he can do the sand and the cage match scrapping!
I Am Number Four, by Pittacus Lore
This sci-fi thriller kicks off with a heart-pounding chase scene and doesn't slow down a whole lot throughout. It revolves around the powerful Garde children from the planet Lorian who are hiding out on earth, ever since the Mogodorians destroyed their planet when they were just little kids. The 9 of them can only be killed in a specific order, and the Mogodorians are intent on making that happen, hunting them down on earth systematically. Three are dead so far, and this is the story of Number Four's fight to stay alive and one day, hopefully, save his planet. He's aided by his mentor, another Garde who shows up at the last minute, a dog who turns out to be more than that, and two humans. Whether they will be enough to fight off a herd of alien hunters and their beasts…
I'm generally a slow reader, but this had tons of suspense that kept me turning pages so fast, I gulped it down in one day – unheard of! I have heard that the movie was not so great, which is a shame, because this has everything you should need to make a good action film, but maybe it was just too over the top? At any rate, I am now itching for the next book, The Power of Six, which comes out in a couple of weeks. Hurry up, August 23rd!
Bonus tip: If you're too impatient to wait for a hold (like me) and can read an ebook, I got this from our online ebook selection with no waiting…

I read I Am Number Four and loved it I am waiting for the sequel called The Power of Six to come out. Blood Red Road sounds interesting so I put a hold on it.
I read ‘I am Number Four’ too and it was just amazing. I thought it was just an individual novel but when I found out that there was a part two- I am so glad. As for Blood Red Road, I put a hold on it recently even though the there were like a 100 holds, but it sounds so interesting that I have to read.
I read I Am Number Four too and I loved it. I’m so glad that I waited to read the book instead of watching the movie first. It was amazing and I can’t wait for the sequel. It’s goanna be so epic! Blood Red Road sounds really interesting. I hope I get a chance to read it!
Ohhh! blood red road sounds soo cool! Especially because I can relate to it!
I’m reallllly interested in reading Blood red road. I got hooked on the fact that she traveling through a desert on her own, can’t wait to get my hands on it
Bload Red Road really caught my interest, I think i’ll definitely read it sometime this week.
I love dystopia novels! I look forward to reading “Blood Read Road.” I haven’t read “I am Number Four” or watched the film yet, but I’m hoping to get around to it some day. 😛
im really liking the blood red road its completely relatable for me
i might try out i am number four, i was a little discouraged after hearing about the movie but otherwise it sounds interesting
😀
I only recently started using the ebook system because I always thought ebooks are a strange concept (and you have to put them on hold too!).
Of course I prefer a hard copy, but compared to waiting through like 100 other holds, reading from your computer’s not so bad.
I read I am Number Four, and even though the writing wasn’t awesome (the sentences were really short and not very intelligent, maybe?), it was definitely interesting. I can’t WAIT to read the next one, which is in a different perspective.
i want to read i am number four, i have it on hold but theres like other people
Definitely looking forward to Blood Red Road, sounds likesomething i’d read! And I read I am Number Four and Ireally liked it, can’t wait for The Power of Six.
I’ve read both, and they’re really amazing! However, I read too many dystopia novels recently, ie, The Chemical Gardens, Awaken, Life as We Knew It, etc, etc, etc! Blood Red Road, to me, is just another chick flick, even though at first, it seems really addicting. I should know, the Hunger Games were addicting enough. But that could be just me. Maybe they’ll suit your tastes!!!
I am number four sounds really cool and interesting
I’ve recently read I Am Number Four. I highly recommend it to those who are thinking of sci-fi books but haven’t. The theme isn’t overly sci-fi so it’s good for those who haven’t tried the theme before.
good book’s
The more I hear about how good Blood Red Road is, the more I want to read it. I put a hold on the book and I hope it arrives soon. I love a good book!
