Charles de Lint normally writes adult fantasy novels, but has written several novels for teens.  His latest venture into teen authorship is The Painted Boy, in which he mixes fantasy with realism.  When we first meet Jay Li he is on his was to Santo del Vado Viejo in the Arizona desert.  Why is he on his way there, especially considering the fact that he would rather be at home in Chicago finishing up his high school degree?  Jay Li, like his grandmother, is a member of the Yellow Dragon Clan.  Members are identified by a large dragon tattooed on their backs.  Jay Li, must travel to Santo del Vado Viejo, as he is on a quest in which he must face a series of challenges that are both dangerous and otherworldly, in order to become the man and dragon he was always meant to be.

  1. Ohhhh, I think this is the perfect book for me! The fact that fantasy is combined with reality already made me want to read it. I also think that it is an adventure book as well considering that the protagonist ventures on a quest. Interesting review, as well! 🙂

  2. If you loved Charles de Lint, you should really try his adult fantasy books! It is filled with such a blend of the fantastical and reality that often times you can wonder if what he writes is actually true! Another author that I absolutely love who writes books in a similar vein is Nina Kiriki Hoffman. Try her books out! 🙂
