Video Book Reviews

June 9, 2010 | TPL Staff | Comments (91)

Word Out 2010 has ended and the information on this page may not be up to date for a more current incarnation of Word Out.

Get the Word Out about a book you love.  Create an original two-minute video book review, post it to YouTube, tag it Word Out tpl  and let us know when it’s posted by making a comment on this page. Every week you post a video, you’ll be entered in a draw to win great prizes.

The Word Out 2010 Video Book Review Playlist

We’ll add more as we get them!  You can see the whole playlist if you like.

Guidelines

What to Put in Your Video (Not Your Face!)

  1. In fact, don’t put anybody’s face in the video, because we don’t want your mom yelling at us for blowing your anonymity. Put glasses on the back of your head, use finger puppets, stick a napkin over your face, write the review in sand at the beach or the playground, animate, prevaricate, salivate… But don’t put your face in the video.
  2. If you put your face in the video, we won’t link it to our website and you will have no chance of winning one of the cool prizes the library is so famous for giving away.
  3. Mention Word Out in your video (say why it’s the coolest thing happening this summer.
  4. Mention Toronto Public Library in your video (say why you love us!)
  5. Show the cover of the book in the video (if you don’t have the book, draw a reasonable facsimile; if you can’t draw very well, just draw some stick figures and write the title on some paper and show it on the video)
  6. Don’t put copyrighted music on your video; you can sing on your video, you can whistle, clap your hands, hum, rap, scream… but no recorded music, please
  7. Videos should be two minutes long or less (don’t put us to sleep, okay)
  8. Have fun! If you don’t have fun making the video, we don’t want it.
  9. Don’t put your face in the video!

When You Finish Making the Video…

  1. Post it to YouTube
  2. Tag it with word out tpl
  3. Make a comment on this page with a link to your video so we can'take a look and put it in our playlist

YouTube help can be found here

Who Can Participate

Anyone 13 to 19 years old and living in the city of Toronto can have a video posted to the Word Out website and be entered in the prize draws. Contestants must have joined Word Out. No one’s face can participate in the video (but knees, elbows, hands and feet are fine).

  1. I am working on mine….
How long do we have to finish this?……. so, I can do what I need to do, in order to finish this video before the deadline.

  2. Finally I finished my video book review πŸ™‚
This is my first time doing it, so mine might not be professional as Nare’s, but I gave it my best…
    Well, here’s the link..

It will be better, if u could comment on what I need to improve, so I can make it better the next time I do it.
    ENJOY!!

  3. Hi Ajai, you can post video reviews as often as you like. I saw that you did post one, so thanks. But feel free to post more. Each week that you enter a review, you’ll get a chance at a prize. You can enter more than one review per week (and we’d love it if you did) but having more than one video per week doesn’t increase your chances of winning a prize.
If you email me at ksparling@torontopubliclibrary.ca, I can arrange to send you a copy of Shane Peacock’s book.

  4. I’ve never made a video before until now. Please bare with this amateur 44 second thing. xD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUTc8OQ489U
It was frustrating to make since I didn’t know how to make it, but it was really fun despite that! I’m definitely going to try for another one! xD
    Any pointers would be great!

  5. I’d love a copy, thank you. πŸ˜€
Just wondering, since I posted this yesterday on Sunday, if I make a vid this week again will it count towards the draw?

  6. I love this video, Nare, well done!
there’s one little problem though, when I look at it on my computer, there’s a place where I think some of the text is cut off. It says “When you receive the ‘mark,’ a crescent shaped tattoo on your forehead, it means that you have” and it stops there. Maybe it’s just my computer…

  7. you need to either email or phone me so I can figure out how to get the book to you Alfea

The cut off date for draws each week is midnight on Sunday, so the video you submitted Sunday will get in on the first week’s draw — anything from today to next sunday goes into the second week draw… etc.
Let me know if you have any other questions!

  8. oops! i see what you mean , it’s supposed to say “when you recieve the mark, a cresent shaped tatoo on your forehead, it means that you have been chosen to become a vampyre”
    sorry about that.
    hope you enjoyed it πŸ™‚

  9. I was almost done my video but I’m just wondering: does that mean we have to get a youtube account to post it here? And no, I don’t have one…

  10. Ken, how would you know if the person really signed up for TPL? And how would you contact the winner? Do you use the email we have to give in with these comments?

  11. Oh, and does the Flip Video Camcorder go to the best review or does it just go to a random review?

  12. Hi Samantha, the draw for the video camcorder is random…
I think if people are praticipating in the discussion groups, it means they signed up, but I’ll check with Alan on that and get back to you if I’m wrong. Anyway, we contact the winners using the email they signed up with…

  13. Ok thank you! My video is below
And by the way, I put up a fake name because it isn’t safe to put up your real name. Is that ok? If you contact me on my email, I will email you my real name.

  14. We can verify the emails people provide here on the blog against the list of emails from the registration if necessary–it’s one of the reasons you should use the same email when making comments that you used to sign up.

  15. Hi again, using a fake name is a good idea, or just your first name. We would actually encourage that, so good call.

  16. How do u put it together? U can’t even download it..
Anyway, This is a great site. Thanks dude! xD

  17. πŸ˜› i exported to youtube, then used youtubes download ur own movie thing, then i stiched themtogetherΒ  with imovie and re-uploaded it to youtube. you can see the two parts on my channel.

  18. Hi again πŸ˜‰
I made a vid on the hilarious book “I AM A GENIUS OF UNSPEAKABLE EVIL AND I WANT TO BE YOUR CLASS PRESIDENT.” Sorry for my fast talking, I wanted to get it all in one take πŸ˜€
I made a small error though, Oliver is actually in 7th grade not 8th. Sorry D:

  19. Sorry I’ll put a real link sooon
My little brother deleted it by accident…I am really sorry about that.
Now I have upload it all over again, so give me a little bit of time.

  20. @Sakshi: Hello~ If you’re having problems with copyright music/pictures, try using royalty-free msuic/stock photos. πŸ™‚

  21. Nice video, I enjoyed watching it and didn’t even notice the “not as pro as some of the videos”

  22. I actually drew & contacted the winners last Friday, but forgot to make a post announcing that this had been done (I had some technical issues last week with various things that stopped me from doing the draw in a more timely manner). Thanks for reminding me to make a post. ^^;

  23. that’s a great review, thanks! I love the music and the way the screens synch with it. And thanks for the fantastic pitches for TPL and Word Out!
    Ken

  24. I made the video with some help from Andrew. Though I forgot to mention TPL and Word Out in my video, I did say some things about it in the video description.

  25. OMG! these videos are amazing. i’ve only made 2 of them, but at this rate, it looks like i need to make more to compete with these videos. I’ll definitely make a video when i get back to Canada from Armenia; in the mean time…HAPPY READING !!

  26. This gave me a good idea of what the series is about, despite not having read any of The Clique (I don’t think it’s a series whose target audience is 30-year old men). πŸ™‚

  27. Here’s my book talk video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mrR9T53j-o
Sorry, I didn’t upload it myself, because I can’t even get on Youtube πŸ™ I am in China right now, and there are some restrictions against Youtube in China, I can’t break the firewall… …
Kennis, our YAG leader helped me uploaded it πŸ™‚
Is it ok if I didn’t upload it myself? I mean, if it is not my Youtube account?

  28. A night of insomnia had me polishing off “Pagan In Exile” by Catherine Jinks. A humourous historical fiction.

The gay subtext was strong in this one. I thought my slash goggles were on too tight, but…turns out a certain character ends up being a “Ganymede.” πŸ™‚
*Not gonna lie, I thought all the gay hints were just a coincidence, and my ‘JUSTKISSALREADYDAMMIT” senses were left over from reading Freakshow.*

  29. The entire Havemercy series is rather popular, my holds are taking a long time. Oh well, I brushed up on my comic reading πŸ˜€
Sorry for uploading a few minutes after the deadline, the loading took a long time πŸ™
“Hellboy Volume 10: The Crooked Man and Others”
